Prof. Dr. Sebastian Henn

Chair of Economic Geography

After studying Geography at the University of Heidelberg and Mannheim, Sebastian Henn became part of the research staff in the expert group for Economic Geography at the Martin-Luther-University in Halle-Wittenberg, where he was awarded his PhD in 2006. In 2010 he held a visiting professorship for Cultural Geography at the Institute of Geography (University of Erlangen-Nuremberg), before becoming a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow in the Department of Political Science at the University of Toronto in the following year. From 2012 to 2014 Sebastian Henn was a research member of staff in the Department „Regional Geography of Europe“ at the Leibniz Institute for Regional Geography. In 2014 he completed his postdoctoral thesis and in October of the same year he accepted a call to the Chair of Economic Geography at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena.

Prof. Dr. Silke Übelmesser

Chair of Economics and Public Finance

After studying Economics at the Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich and the University of Louvain-la-Neuve in Belgium, Silke Übelmesser became a research assistant at the Center for Economic Studies at the Ludwig Maximilian University, where she graduated with a PhD in 2003 and also completed her postdoctoral thesis in 2010 on the topic of „Migration and Education: Fiscal and Non-Fiscal Implications“. While she was based in Munich, she also completed research stays at the European University in Florence and at the University of Bocconi in Milan and was program director for the CESifo GmbH. From 2012 Silke Übelmesser has been Professor for Economics and Public Finance at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena as well as Research Professor at the Ifo Institute in Munich.

Chair of Economics and Public Finance

Tina Haußen studied Business Studies from 2007 to 2012 at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena. Since 2012 she has been a research assistant and a PhD candidate at the Chair of Economics and Public Finance. Her PhD thesis is on „Public Spending and its Relation to Redistributive Preferences and Highly Skilled Migration”.

Stefan Töpfer

Chair of Economics and Public Finance

Stefan Töpfer studied Economics at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena. After that he was a member of the research project „Evaluation of leading edge cluster competition“ and started to work on his PhD in the DFG Research Training Group „The Economics of Innovative Change“. The topic of his PhD is the effects of research funding on cooperation behaviour in the field of R&D. He currently works as a research assistant for the Chair of Economics and Public Finance.

Ekaterina Maruk completed her Masters Degree Program in Social Work with a focus on Management and Research at the Ernst-Abbe University in Jena (EAH Jena). Her Masters thesis was on the topic: „Perspectives and intentions of international students from the Ernst-Abbe University in Jena to remain in Germany“. Since June 2015 she has been coordinating the project STAY – Studying, Working and Living in Thuringia at the EAH University in Jena.

Dr. Susann Schäfer

Chair of Economic Geography

Susann Schäfer studied Geography at the University of Bayreuth from 2004 to 2009. After that she conducted research as a PhD candidate in the DFG project „Complex TERRain and ECOlogical Heterogeneity“ and wrote her PhD thesis in 2014 on climate change politics in South Korea, which was published by the publisher Transcript in 2015 with the title: „Climate Change Adaptation in South Korea“. Since 2015 Susann Schäfer has been part of the research staff for the Chair of Economic Geography, conducting research on the economic geographical significance of foreign professionals and entrepreneurs. In addition to research and teaching activities at the FSU Jena, Susann Schäfer also works on the editorial board and as a reviewer for the Journal of Economic Geography.

Lea Kvarantan Huber studied European Studies with a focus on post-socialist transformation and European integration in South-east Europe at the Universities of Leipzig and Sofia (Bulgaria). She completed her Bachelor degree program in German and Romance studies at the University of Zadar (Croatia) and at the Karl-Franzens University in Graz (Austria).

After obtaining his physicist degree at the TU Berlin, working in industry and as an innovation consultant, Wilfried Roepke became managing director with Jena Business Development in 2008. Jena Business Development is a municipal service provider for local businesses, also working to improve location factors (skilled workers, commercial land, and internationalization) and promoting Jena as a business and science location. Wilfried Roepke is a member of various trade associations. Together with Angelika Stenzel, he manages Jena’s Alliance for Skilled Workers and as chairman he is also involved with witelo e.V. a non-profit organization for scientific-technical places of learning in Jena.

As project manager Ramona Scheiding is responsible for the strategic direction in regards to skilled worker topics. She coordinates the Jena’s Alliance for Skilled Workers and individual steering committees, manages the Welcome Service as well as the International Club Jena. She represents Jena Business Development in several regional and national networks with focus on skilled worker recruitment and dual career service as well as in projects like Stay (Study Work Life in Thuringia) and PereS (Skilled workers for Thuringia).
